What you enter

Enter the conception date, so the year is included, and the age you were then. Age here means ordinary birthday age: the number of birthdays you had already had. The chart on this page runs from 18 to 45, which is the range most printed copies use.

The columns are lunar months, numbered 1 to 12. Lunar month 1 starts on Chinese New Year, not on January 1. The calculator counts forward from that day in steps of about 29.5 days, which is the average length of a lunar month. A date very close to the next new moon can belong to the neighboring month. Some lunar years also insert an extra leap month. This chart has no leap-month column, so those days stay inside the twelve regular months.

How to read the chart

Find the age in the left column. Find the lunar month across the top. Read the cell where that row and column cross. Blue cells say boy. Pink cells say girl. After you submit the form, the matching cell is outlined.

People often miss by a row because they use today's age, or because they treat January as lunar month 1. Use the age at conception. Let the date pick the month. If you only know the calendar month and the age, the baby gender predictor reads the same chart without the lunar-year shift.

How much to trust it

A study that compared the chart with millions of Swedish birth records found it matched the recorded sex about half the time. That is what you would expect from chance. Enjoy the result, then ignore it when you are actually choosing. Sex is confirmed by a clinician, not by a grid.

If the guess sends you looking for names, start with boy names or girl names, or keep both open with gender neutral names.
