About Boy or Girl Names

Boy or Girl Names is an independent site for parents choosing a name. It started with one question people ask all the time: is this a boy name, a girl name, or both? We answer it with counts, not opinions, using US Social Security records for every year from 1880 to 2024.

The site shows where each number comes from and how it was calculated. The methodology page lists every source and rule. When we do not have a reliable source for something, such as what a name means, we leave it out rather than guess.

You do not need an account. The shortlist you build stays in your browser, and the privacy policy explains the analytics we use.
