Most popular baby names of 1889

In 1889, the most popular names for US babies were John for boys (8,548 babies, 7.7% of boys) and Mary for girls (11,648 babies, 6.5% of girls). The rest of the top five were William, James, George and Charles for boys and Anna, Elizabeth, Margaret and Emma for girls. SSA recorded 1,111 different boy names and 1,479 different girl names that year.
