In 1988, the most popular names for US babies were Michael for boys (64,168 babies, 3.4% of boys) and Jessica for girls (51,557 babies, 2.9% of girls). The rest of the top five were Christopher, Matthew, Joshua and Andrew for boys and Ashley, Amanda, Sarah and Jennifer for girls. SSA recorded 8,493 different boy names and 13,882 different girl names that year.
