In 2000, the most popular names for US babies were Jacob for boys (34,491 babies, 1.8% of boys) and Emily for girls (25,959 babies, 1.4% of girls). The rest of the top five were Michael, Matthew, Joshua and Christopher for boys and Hannah, Madison, Ashley and Sarah for girls. SSA recorded 12,118 different boy names and 17,659 different girl names that year.
