In 1992, the most popular names for US babies were Michael for boys (54,409 babies, 2.7% of boys) and Ashley for girls (38,461 babies, 2.1% of girls). The rest of the top five were Christopher, Matthew, Joshua and Andrew for boys and Jessica, Amanda, Brittany and Sarah for girls. SSA recorded 9,820 different boy names and 15,610 different girl names that year.
